Hey y’all….
I’m just back from “out there”, Tour Managing for The Victor Wooten Band. Folks… it ain’t easy…and it AIN’t glamorous….. but it sure is fun.
The US portion of the tour was broken up into 3 runs… 10 shows in February… 17 in March/April … and 14 in April/May. The last 2 runs were basically back to back… and a killer, with no days off in each. Well, we did have “VWB days off”…which means either 14 hours on the bus, or a flight to somewhere (Anchorage, Alaska!!!). No malls, no movies, no bowling….no laundry.
The 10 days off between runs was filled up with a Bass/Nature Camp and a week-end building the new permanent home for the camp near Nashville. I spent most of that time on the phone, advancing the April/May run.
Some random thoughts….
- Steve Weingart is a keyboard player you MUST check out. His MySpace is here.
- Always ask what city you’re in before going on stage to announce the band. By the 3rd or 4th day out you do not know. “HELLO Cleveland!” doesn’t go over well in Chicago.
- You’re never more than a few blocks away from a Starbucks.
- Playing NYC is great if you’re on stage. It’s murder if you’re the TM.
- Alaska is BIG.
- Low Fat yogurt is bad for you.
- Bill Burr is very funny… a kickin’ drummer…and a great guy.
- People in Oregon are cool.
- You never get sick of Thai, sushi, or pizza.
- Flying is a total pain in the butt.
- When crossing into Canada, you are now guilty of something first and must prove that you’re not.
- Go see a Cirque du Soleil show.
- Buses burn LOTS of fuel.
- Central New York is a great place to come home to.
So…. I’m home.
Anybody need a bass player????
